The RF4 WD168 0.48X Microscope Auxiliary Objective Barlow Lens (48mm / M48 Thread) is an optical enhancement engineered specifically for trinocular and binocular stereo zoom microscopes used on micro-soldering benches, smartphone motherboard repair labs, and precision electronics inspection lines. Designed to thread directly into standard 48mm (1-7/8") objective collars, this optical lens modifies your optical system to deliver an expansive 168mm (6.6 inches) working distance while cutting primary magnification power to roughly half (0.48X).

For chip-level technicians performing complex multi-layer logic board rework, clearance between the microscope objective and the PCB surface is critical. Standard stereo microscope heads sit at roughly 100mm, forcing technicians to angle hot air rework nozzles and micro-soldering irons awkwardly while risking smoke, flux spatter, and thermal damage to factory objective optics. Installing the RF4 WD168 increases your vertical bench height to 168mm, giving hot air handpieces, bent-tip tweezers, and desktop smoke absorbers unrestricted operational clearance.

Key Engineering Features & Bench Advantages:

  • Extended 168mm Working Clearance (WD168): Raises the operational focal plane to 168mm, giving technicians room to maneuver high-temperature hot air guns and soldering irons at ergonomic angles without bumping the optical head.
  • Double-Sided Field of View Expansion: Halves magnification factor (transforming a standard 7X–50X optical head into an expansive 3.36X–24X visual range), allowing technicians to view larger board sections, trace continuous power rails, and inspect multiple IC blocks simultaneously.
  • Standard 48mm (M48 × 0.75) Screw Thread: Precision-machined aluminum mounting thread screws into RF4 models (RF-7050, RF-6565), as well as standard 48mm (1-7/8") stereo zoom heads from Relife, Mechanic, Sunshine, and AmScope.
  • High-Clarity Multi-Coated Optical Glass: Multi-layer anti-reflective broadband coating ensures high light transmission, edge-to-edge optical clarity, and zero chromatic distortion under high-intensity 56-LED or 144-LED ring illuminators.
  • Internal Objective Lens Thermal & Flux Protection: Acts as a physical optical barrier that shields sensitive, expensive internal microscope objective elements from rising rosin fumes, vaporized flux, and convective rework heat.
  • CNC Machined Anodized Aluminum Barrel: Finished in RF4's signature durable anodized alloy housing to withstand workshop knocks, flux residues, and regular isopropyl alcohol (IPA) cleanings.

Bench Installation & Parfocal Alignment Guide:

  1. Thread Cleaning: Inspect the objective threads on your stereo microscope head. Clean out accumulated dust and rosin particles using an ESD brush and an optical microfiber cloth.
  2. Mounting the Lens: Line up the 48mm male thread of the RF4 WD168 lens with the bottom internal thread of the microscope head. Thread it clockwise by hand until snug. Do not cross-thread or overtighten.
  3. Attaching Ring Illuminator: Mount your LED ring light onto the outer ring of the Barlow lens housing and tighten its retaining thumbscrews.
  4. Pillar Height Readjustment: Because focal distance expands from ~100mm to ~168mm, raise the microscope head bracket roughly 68mm higher on your vertical bench pillar to acquire initial focus.
  5. Parfocal Tuning: Zoom to maximum magnification (e.g., 50X) and sharpen focus on a small motherboard component using the coarse/fine knobs. Zoom back out to lowest magnification and tweak the eyepiece diopter focus rings until the visual plane remains sharp across the entire continuous zoom range.
